Masters of Fitness

You should know that ...

Much if not most of the physical deterioration of you body is NOT the result of aging

Your physical decline IS more the consequence of choices you have made and continue to make than it is of aging

You want proof -- I'll give you proof

Ray Piva, Ultra-Marathon Runner

Despite struggling to jog a single quarter mile at age 54, this former smoker ran 109 miles at the USATF 24-Hour National Championships -- at AGE 77. That is an amazing feat of endurance at any age! Does that challenge your current beliefs about aging just a little bit? Need more proof?

Lynne Nelson, Power Lifter

This 46-year-old full-time working mother of two won the US PowerLifting Championships (outlifting the top 20 and 30-year-old lifters) with a 3-lift total of 1,026 pounds. Doesn't sound like turning 40 slowed her down. Need more proof?

Laura Val, Swimmer

A world-ranked swimmer in her youth, earning invitations to the US Olympic trials in 1968 and 1972, Laura was able to set several lifetime best times at ages 49 and 50. For example, in a sport where tenths and hundredths of seconds often separate swimmers in the sprints, she was able, at age 49, to cut a whole 3 seconds off her best time for the 100-yard freestyle in her "prime" -- 56.2 sec. to 53.2 sec. Does that sound like aging to you? Need more proof?

Helen Klein, Ultra-Marathon Runner

Helen ran five (5) 100-mile mountain-trail races in a 16-week period, at age 66. Just completing a single 100-miler would be an amazing accomplishment AT ANY AGE! Yet, back at age 55, when Helen first attempted to jog about a mile in her backyard, she "HAD to quit" because she says, "I thought I was going to die!" Did Helen age or "grow younger" over those 11 years? Need more proof?

Joe Bonness, Ironman Triathlete

All Joe did was win the Great Floridian Triathlon -- at age 48 -- beating out 482 other male triathletes. But this wasn't just any triathlon; this was an Ironman where competitors swim 2.4 miles, then immediately jump on their bikes for a 112-mile races and THEN run a complete 26.2-mile marathon. But there's more. just one week earlier he ran the famous Hawaiian Ironman. His times were an impressive, 9 hours 45 minutes for the Great Floridian and 9:42 for the Hawaiian. But there's more: Just two weeks later he ran another -- the Ironman Florida in a personal record / lifetime best of 9 hours 9 minutes. That's right, he ran three Ironman triathlons in a 3-week span -- all 3 in under 10 hours. How many 20-year-olds could do that? Need more proof?

Margery Meyers, Swimmer

At age 64 Margery had arrhythmia (irregular heart beat), a cholesterol reading of 385 mg/dl, and no competitive swimming experience. Then she took up competitivie swimming -- go figure! To make a long story short, in her eighties she held almost every freestyle world record for the 80-84 age group, from 50 meters to the very taxing 1500. She became the first 80-year-old to break 30 minutes for the 1500 with a time of 29:35. That's equivalent to swimming the length of your local high school football field and into the end zone 15 times at under 2 minutes per length of the field. Challenge John Q at any age to try that and see what happens. Need any more proof?

Robert F. Beal, Cyclist

At age 55, Robert was obese (245 pounds packed on an average-sized frame), a 2-pack-a-day smoker, and grossly out of shape. He stumbled upon his adult son's bike on his way to mow the lawn and decided to take it for a spin -- his first bike ride since his youth. The 3-mile foray (or wobble-a-thon) left him so sore the next day that he thought he would "die from the pain." Despite this discomfort, he decided that cycling would be a fun way to get fit. Gradually he cycled himself back into shape -- good enough shape to become a World Champion age-group cyclist and enjoy 300 miles of cycling weekly in his sixties and seventies. Need more Proof?

Dick Collins, Ultra-Distance Runner

At age 41, a doctortold Dick, a more-than-60-pounds-overweight smoker, that he had better make some lifestyle changes or else. so Dick cleaned up his act and started running -- boy, did he ever start running! In the next 21 or so years, he completed 1,000 long-distance races -- more than 250 of them at least 30 miles or longer. At 51 he won the Gator 24-Hour Foot Race by covering 116 miles. You could say he got himself into the best shape of his life. He's further proof that you can lose the fat and transform yourself -- further proof that you can recapture the energy of youth and then some!

Sue Ellen Trapp, Ultra-Marathon Runner

Sue Ellen, a dentist by trade and with no sports background, started running in her 30s just to lose some weight after the birth of her daughter, Kristina. She got good at running. At Surgeres, France she set the women's open World Record for a 48-hour race with a litle more than234 miles covered -- at age 51. At age 55, she became the oldest person ever to win a U.S. open title in a track event. She did this by running 126 miles at the 2001 24-Hour National Championships in Olander Park, Ohio. Want more proof?

Dorothy Barron

And then there's Dorothy Barron, a 63-year-old mother of eleven. She participated in a study on the effects of strength training on post-menopausal women. It led to her taking up weight training and power walking. While she didn't go on to world-record athletic performances as did the aforementioned, she did greatly improve her life -- which is probably more what you are looking to do. She went from having a deteriorating body that was starting to interfere with her ability to do her daily activities and enjoy life fully to a strong, energetic person who was ready to take on new challenges and adventures, including parasailing over Maui at sunset, enjoying a white-water rafting adventure, horseback riding, and competing in the senior olympics.

Nursing home patients in their 80s and 90s, with two or more serious chronic ailments each, were able to increase their strength more than 100% with just three strength workouts per week over a 12-week period

Why The Answer Doesn't Lie ...
In The Latest Diet Or Fitness Craze

The bottom line is that:

People pay for expensive, long-term health-club memberships ...
And then they don't go - know anyone like that?

put the weight right back on - plus more for good measure - know anyone like that?

If you REALLY believed that you could significantly slow the aging process, lose the weight and keep it off, and have the energy-level of a 20-year-old -- nothing could keep you from getting to the gym, sticking with an improved diet, or taking back up that FUN activity you enjoyed so much those many years ago.
